What is Microneedling?

What is microneedling? Put simply, microneedling is a method used by dermatologists use to treat a number of different skin conditions.

The technique uses multiple tiny, sterile needles that puncture the skin and cause physical trauma. The trauma prompts the derma (deeper layer of skin) to heal and rebuild.

The most popular (and cost-effective) microneedling device, a dermaroller that is made of micro-fine needles that range in diameter from 0.5 and 2.5 millimeters. The punctures only enter surface-level deep and cause tiny pricks (like pinpricks) on the skin.

What is microneedling used for?

Microneedling is well known for its ability to rejuvenate the skin for a brighter, more youthful appearance. However, it is also used to address multiple skin-related problems, including:

  • alopecia

  • wrinkles

  • rosacea

  • acne

  • skin pigmentation issues

  • stretch marks

  • scarring

  • loose skin

Microneedling can also be used to penetrate common skincare ingredients deeper into the skin such as topical hyaluronic acid, retinoids, vitamin C or tretinoin. This can boost the effectiveness of the ingredient and combat a number of issues.

Of course, before you look at treating a patient, you should hold a consultation to first understand their concerns and devise a suitable treatment plan that will work for them. You should also pay attention to any allergies or skin sensitivities your patient may have.

The results

Microneedling offers some fairly instant results, and some longer lead results. Following treatment, your patient’s skin may appear plumper and more luminous. However, the main results of microneedling come from the skin actually healing itself so many people begin to see extreme results after a few sessions.

Post treatment care

Post treatment, you will need to advise your patient to be very gentle with the skin for a couple of days. Patients should avoid washing their skin for the rest of the day, avoid any heat (including the sun) and avoid going to the gym, or performing any other activity that may cause them to sweat.

It is important to remember that microneedling only offers a temporary result, and you should advise your patients that retreatment is required often. For more permanent results, you could combine microneedling with radio frequency treatments.
